Common Summer Issues
Finally Leaving the dry season!
As we move into our rainy time of year seasonal problems transition. Active drought stress problems become less. However, drought damage is prevalent.
With the typical rain, drought damaged areas start recovering.
Pest and Disease issues are typical.
Sod Webworm activity typically peaks in July and will continue into the fall.
Chinch Bugs, the #1 turf destroying pest in the south, are highly active. Monthly treatment is mandatory for control, in some cases additional treatments are required for resistant populations.
If you see areas that looked scalped in your lawn the likely culprit is Sod Webworms.
If you see areas in your lawn that are brown and expanding, despite recent rains, the likely culprit is Chinch Bugs.
In both of these cases we suggest additional treatments. Please click below to schedule.
Turf diseases like grey leaf spot start to show up this time of year.
If you see signs of disease make sure to go to an "as needed" irrigation cycle. As long as we are getting plenty of afternoon showers supplemental irrigation is not always needed. Be proactive in reducing irrigation especially to shady areas of your lawn. Take all root rot becomes an issue in areas that retain water, are not well drained, and/or shady areas. Take all root rot should be addressed with top tier fungicides like Pillar G or Headway G fungicide.
If you are seeing areas in the shade thin out our first recommendation is to cut the irrigation back. If the thinning continues we suggest scheduling additional fungicide applications.
